Big Changes, Big Impact
Several major upgrades have already been implemented at Hyndburn Leisure Centre, with newly installed solar panels which now supply a portion of the centre’s electricity needs plus outdated gas boilers have been replaced with cutting-edge air source heat pumps, which dramatically reduce emissions while improving energy efficiency and now, thanks to additional funding from Sport England Swimming Pool Support Fund, further energy-saving upgrades are in progress. These include replacing ageing energy controls, upgrading ventilation fans, and installing inverters to optimise power consumption throughout the centre.
Cutting Energy Waste
The next phase of the sustainability initiative will target energy waste at all levels. Advanced energy monitoring systems will be introduced to provide real-time tracking and analysis of energy use, helping to pinpoint inefficiencies and ensure that energy is only consumed where and when it is needed.
Insulation improvements are also planned to minimise heat loss and further reduce energy consumption. Additionally, lighting across the facility will be upgraded to high-efficiency LED systems, delivering superior illumination while consuming significantly less power.

A Learning Experience for Future Innovators
Hyndburn Leisure’s eco-upgrades are also providing a valuable learning opportunity for the next generation of engineers. Students from Preston College recently visited the facility to explore its cutting-edge systems.
“The energy demands of a swimming pool were an eye-opener for the students,” said lecturer Scott Vicari. “They were amazed by the scale of energy consumption but also impressed by how effectively the building energy management systems control and optimise usage. It’s one thing to learn about sustainable systems in class, but seeing them in action is invaluable. Understanding how sustainability can be integrated into existing infrastructure was a highlight,”
