Hyndburn Leisure is proud to announce the launch of a free 12-week programme of physical activity and wellbeing sessions for unpaid carers, made possible through a generous £10,000 grant from Sport England and The National Lottery.
Set to begin in Spring 2025, the programme is designed to support the physical and mental wellbeing of carers across the borough. Delivered in partnership with Carers Link Lancashire and other local organisations, the initiative will take place on the 3G pitch at Hyndburn Leisure Centre, weather permitting.
From netball, football, tennis, and cricket to gentle options like yoga, the sessions cater to all fitness levels and offer a welcoming environment to try something new, meet others, and enjoy a well-deserved break. Carers are even encouraged to bring a friend for additional support.
Councillor Noordad Aziz, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said:
“This initiative reflects Hyndburn Leisure’s commitment to supporting those who do so much for others, often without recognition or rest. It’s fantastic to see the Trust partnering with Carers Link Lancashire to offer carers the chance to boost their wellbeing, connect with others, and simply take a breather.”
National research highlights the urgent need for such initiatives:
- 34% of unpaid carers exercise significantly less due to caregiving duties
- 80% report feelings of loneliness or isolation
This programme aims to combat those statistics by creating space for carers to focus on their own health, happiness, and community connection.
Rebecca Hodgson, CEO of Carers Link Lancashire, added:
“Carers often put their own needs last, but projects like this give them a valuable opportunity to focus on themselves. We’re delighted to be involved in shaping this supportive, inclusive space for carers to unwind, build friendships, and recharge.”
Participants can look forward to:
- Relaxed, friendly sessions led by trained professionals
- Opportunities to learn new skills and build confidence
- A chance to have a brew and a chat with others who understand the caregiving journey
This pilot is only the beginning. Hyndburn Leisure and its partners are committed to learning from this project and expanding it in the future, ensuring continued support for carers and other underserved groups in the community.
Free for carers registered with Carers Link Lancashire.
