Meet the Team……..
My name is Fahima Iqbal, I have been working in the fitness industry for 5 years. I was one of the first instructors to come on board for Active Women and played a massive part in the development and success of the project. The project has been a huge part of my life and is very close to my heart. We have reached out so many women to engage in physical activity and reach goals they would never have expected. The project offers a wide range of different, fun, energetic sessions. The timetable is suitable for anyone and venues are easy to get to. We have a fantastic team of instructors who each bring their own flavour and passion to the project. The sessile are on at a bargain price of £2.50! So come along and party with us!
I teach Zumba, Zumba kids, Zumba Sentano, Boxercise, Boxercise kids, Bollywood fitness, aerobics, toning. Bokwa, LBT, Street Fit, Street Fit kids. I enjoy teaching all of these different sessions but any dance based sessions are my favourite.
My passion is dancing. My feet just don’t stop moving. I teach a variety of styles from hip hop, street, salsa, Latin American to Bollywood and dancehall.
One of my biggest achievements with active women has been to train up my colleague Jessica Baines who came on board as a volunteer at my session. Her journey and success has been truly inspirational! I love working for active women as we target such a wide range of communities and help them not just physically but socially and mentally.
Outside of active women I work with young people aged 8-21 engaging then through physical activity and dance. I also work with young people with disabilities. In my spare time I like to spend time with my partner and my best friends. I’m usually shopping or at Nandos!
Exercise has always been a part of my life whether it was being part of a dance troupe from the age of 6 – 16. Taking part in sports at school, to joining my university gym and taking up swimming or getting all my friends together and having a game of rounder’s at our local park.
A particular passion of mine is running. Once I finished university I decided to set myself a challenge of running a 5k. I had never taken up running before and frankly it scared me a little. I found that once I started I really enjoyed running and once I completed my 5k I had the bug and went on to complete Sunderland 10k.
After having my daughter my fitness levels plummeted and so had my self-esteem. I didn’t feel confident or fit enough to go to the gym. I found out about Active Women through my local children’s centre and decided to give the classes a try. I found the instructors welcoming and friendly they allowed me to work at my own pace and most of all I had fun.
I found my fitness levels returning and decided to take up running again. This time I set myself the challenge of running the great north run (half marathon.) It was one of the best things I have done and who know if a marathon is on the cards next?
Exercise is again part of my life whether it is taking my daughter for a walk going for a run with my husband or running my classes. I currently have a run group on a Monday and run the Bootcamp session every Wednesday. I really enjoy seeing people from all different fitness levels progress. Mostly I enjoy having loads of fun while exercising!
