Back in 2015, Baxenden Bugs started with a few members of the local Slimming World group starting running to help them on their weight loss journey. They enjoyed being more active and signed up for Couch to 5K to give themselves a goal to work towards.
As the weeks went by, they were joined by more people who wanted to start running but didn’t confident enough to go on their own or join any of the other local running clubs. The founder members recognised that there was a need for a community running club that catered for beginners. They formed a committee and Baxenden Bugs became an official group.
The committee ask members to make a contribution of just £1 at the end of the month which will be donated to a local charity.
Baxenden Bugs welcomes everyone and now has over five hundred members. The Bugs meet on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7pm and Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9am, all the runs start from Haworth Park in Baxenden. Whether you are just starting out running, training for a marathon or something in between, the group organises different runs which cater for all ages, abilities, speeds and distances.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Baxenden Bugs has helped to change people’s lives. Running is good for both our physical and mental health. It is a great form of exercise and will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet. There are also many mental benefits of running. Running can also be a great stress reliever and taking on the running challenge like the Couch to 5K can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove to yourself that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal.
